While findings based on search results may not be entirely conclusive, we feel safe in asserting that these numbers say something about the ubiquity of this phrase in relation to first-year writing. Chances are that when any of us discuss what we want our students to take from our courses, “critical thinking, reading, and writing” are among the first we mention. The question, though, is what wemeanby “critical thinking, reading, and writing” when we work to implement these outcomes. As
