Zusammenfassung: | Few would argue that Australians want a nation that is both prosperous and fair, and that they want their policy makers to set policy instruments so as to achieve both targets. But which of these two targets should the instrument of workplace relations be aimed at - prosperity or fairness? And are the two targets necessarily in conflict? In addressing these questions, the link between workplace relations policies and prosperity, especially in recent history, is reviewed. The link between workplace relations policies and fairness is then reviewed. It is argued that the primary target of workplace relations policies - and the ongoing workplace relations reform agenda - ought to be aimed at enhancing prosperity. Furthermore, it is argued that prioritising workplace relations reforms towards efficiency will not lead to less fairness because of the role played by the tax and transfer system. |
