Zusammenfassung:An analysis of the operations involved in the observation of soc action (conduct or meaningful soc action) as distinguished from behavior. Soc acts are units of action structured by the conventional & consensual conceptions of the participants. These are not behaviors in the Watsonian sense, but their legitimacy has not been generally accepted despite their frequent use as data in much field work. Objective observation of soc acts involves, 1st, the development (through 'learning the native language' or 'resoc'ization' of the O) of a descriptive list or catalog of these conventional & consensual units, & 2nd, the comparison of what one sees with this catalog. The sci'fic datum is thus the judgment that what is seen is congruent with a particular item in the catalog. A separate operation, involved in COMM, is the inference that what the O has found in his catalog is what the actor observed has in his catalog (in his mind) at this moment. The validity of the inference may be tested by a 3rd action, confirmation, through observation of the action implications of the catalog item. Neither the inference nor the confirmation are necessary to the observation of action. Most discussions of verstehen fail to distinguish these separate operations & thus lead to a confusion of the observation of action with COMM & with the problems of actor motivation. AA.
