Zusammenfassung: | Urban intensification has been promoted as a way to preserve green spaces and increase urban capacity. The means through which this can be achieved are defined variously by governments at different levels. This examination of the role and management of green space in the urban environment addresses the primary benefits of open space: recreational opportunities, psychological benefits, and natural habitat. The focus is on policy development governing open spaces in the UK. Surveys of city managers show that developed green spaces, such as parks, are accorded higher value than undeveloped green spaces, particularly abandoned industrial or residential sites. A broader regional approach to planning is recommended. Green space classification according to biota is also recommended. |
