Zusammenfassung: | The study was undertaken to investigate the relationship and effects of Eugenia jambolana (EJ) extract on pancreas morphology, architecture and function in streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetic rats. Experimental diabetes mellitus was induced in Wistar rats with single intraperitoneal administration of STZ (45mg/kg). The rats were separated into four groups as follows: Group I served as normal control and group II served as diabetic control. Group III and IV served as diabetic and administered with 200 mg/kg of EJ extract and 0.6 mg/kg of glibenclamide orally once daily for 45 days, respectively. Light microscopic evaluation of islets of Langerhans showed highly swollen βcells with loss of cytoplasmic granularity, vacuolations, necrosis, elongated β-cells and sparse cellularity in diabetic rats. There were also significant (P |
