Evaluating software maintenance support tools for their support of program comprehension

New tools that purport to help programmers understand software during maintenance and evolution are appearing on the market with increasing frequency. Just how good are they at supporting software comprehension is frequently only "demonstrated" by anecdote or hearsay. This paper reports on an analysis infrastructure for formally performing such evaluation, and on an application of the evaluation instrument to an existing tool, Lemma.
