Mechanism of optical losses in bismuth-doped silica fibers

Background optical losses in Bi:SiO 2 glass and fibers fabricated and heat-treated in different redox conditions are studied. It is shown that these losses are mainly due to the absorption by metallic bismuth nanoparticles in glass.
