Enhancing the Gulf of Mexico Coastal Ocean Observing System Regional Association (GCOOS RA): Activities of the GCOOS Education and Outreach Council

The Gulf of Mexico Coastal Ocean Observing System Regional Association (GCOOS RA) provides strong support for its Education and Outreach Council (EOC). In addition to 10% of program funds going toward education and outreach initiatives, Board members and members from other commute¿es routinely participate in EOC activities. As a result, the GCOOS RA has been able to serve an active role in both Gulf-wide and national IOOS Education and Outreach (E/O) development This paper presents activities of the EOC. Included are results from outreach to recreational boaters, fishermen and divers, K-12 and informal educators, and extension personnel from state agencies, aquariums, and science centers. Also discussed are collaborations with other regional and national programs including the EPA-Gulf of Mexico Program, Coastal America, the Gulf of Mexico Alliance, and the National Federation of Regional Associations.
