Zusammenfassung:The mechanical and optical features of the new high-density optical backplane system based on MT-ferrules are demonstrated. Up to 48 fibers can be connected through a back-panel area of 25/spl times/21 mm/sup 2/. The system is optimized for simple use within the common electrical system SIPAC and does not need special tight tolerances. Therefore it can be used in a similar manner to the electrical connectors. The performance of the optical connections is similar to that which is achieved with common optical connectors.
