Novel mid-infrared random powder lasers Cr/sup 2+/:ZnS vs. Cr/sup 2+/:ZnSe

We report the first room-temperature pulsed lasing from the single-crystalline Cr 2+ :ZnS (around 2.3 mum) and Cr 2+ :ZnSe (around 2.4 mum) powders with the threshold pump energy density as low as ~34 mJ/cm 2
