German Books On Gallıpolı: The Problem Of Untranslated Works In Hıstorıcal Research

When you check the bibliography o f almost any book about the Gallipoli Campaign, you see that British writers (or Australians, Canadians, etc.) referred only to sources in English and Turkish authors used Turkish-only sources. The writers referred to non-English or non-Turkish sources only if they were available in translation or that language was personally known by the writer. In other words, all sources about Gallipoli not in a language known by the author were not considered. Writers in English excluded all French, German, Turkish, and Russian books and any other non-visual unpublished material such as archive documents. Turkish writers are slightly luckier, having access to a greater number o f translated works; nevertheless, the situation is generally the same.
