Zusammenfassung:Based on the theories of "Personality Traits" and "Experiential Learning", several studies have shown that there is a two-way causal relationship between volunteering and college students' non-cognitive abilities. Using follow-up survey data from the College Students Development in Hunan Province, this study employs the difference-in-difference approach to examine the causal relationship between volunteering and non-cognitive abilities, with the aim of revealing whether volunteering screens or cultivates the non-cognitive abilities of college students. The analysis results confirm that volunteering has a screening effect on extraversion and conscientiousness, a cultivating effect on agreeableness, and neither a screening effect nor a cultivating effect on emotional stability and openness. These findings suggest that volunteering primarily selects students' non-cognitive abilities through the personality trait mechanism, and has limited influence in cultivating non-cognitive abilities.
