Zusammenfassung:We describe a detector system which can uniquely identify heavy projectile fragments produced in nucleus-nucleus reactions in the few GeV/nucleon energy region. The system consists of a superconducting dipole magnet with (1) a drift chamber for tracking, (2) a Cherenkov hodoscope for charge measurements, (3) a Cherenkov hodoscope for velocity measurements, and (4) a multiplicity array to measure the number of participant protons. We have achieved a charge resolution of σ Z = 0.22 e, a mass resolution of σ A = 0.21 amu, and a rigidity resolution of σ R / R = 5.2 × 10 −3 at 5.4 GeV/c. The velocity resolution of the Cherenkov hodoscope is estimated to be σ β ≈ 4.0 × 10 −4 for β = 0.93.
