In a global way, literature is the field of expression of different realitiesthat characterize the life of the man. But beyond the human motive, it also givesto read and understand other entities which share the space of the man. This isthe case of the oral literature of the Sanan of Burkina Faso, which offers todiscover, in this case through the nicknames worn by the traditional wrestlers, thesurrounding zoological world and the different representations that the societymakes of each animal species. Indeed, some of the names worn by wrestlers areformulated using animal motifs, whose exegesis reveals a certain number of socialsymbolizations that guide the choice of these animals in the names. Thus, whetherit is the cunning and agility of the hare, the power and recklessness of the buffalo,the danger of the viper or the art of camouflage of the partridge, all these qualitiesrecognized to these species are essential, not only to intimidate the opponent, butespecially to defeat him. The study essentially aims to discover the socialrepresentations that the Sanan have of certain animal species that they summonin the formulation of their nicknames within the framework of the practice oftraditional wrestling. D’une manière globale, la littérature est le champ d’expression dedifférentes réalités qui caractérisent la vie de l’homme. Mais au-delà du motifhumain, elle donne aussi à lire et comprendre d’autres entités qui partagentl’espace de l’homme. C’est le cas de la littérature orale des Sanan du Burkina Fasoqui offre à découvrir, en l’occurrence à travers les surnoms portés par les lutteurstraditionnels, le monde zoologique ambiant et les différentes représentations quela société se fait de chaque espèce animale. En effet, certains noms de combatarborés par des lutteurs sont formulés à l’aide de motifs animaux, dont l’exégèserévèle un certain nombre de symbolisations sociales qui guident le choix de cesanimaux dans les noms. Ainsi, que ce soit la ruse et l’agilité du lièvre, la puissanceet la témérité du buffle, la dangerosité de la vipère ou l’art de camouflage de laperdrix, toutes ces qualités reconnues à ces espèces sont indispensables, nonseulement pour intimider l’adversaire, mais surtout pour le vaincre.
