Zusammenfassung:The polyether carboxylic antibiotics have the ability to transport cations through biological membranes by forming lipophilic complexes. In the course of our study of the biosynthesis of nigericin, we have been able to increase the titer of polyether antibiotics over 20-fold after 7 days by adding methyl oleate (1%) to the original fermentation culture of nigericin-producing Streptomyces hygroscopicus NRRL B-1865. In addition, this increased yield allowed us to isolate two new antibiotics, abierixin and epinigericin, closely related to nigericin.
