Zusammenfassung:This paper presents information on ultrastructural features of asci in cryofractured apothecia as observed in stereoscopic pairs. Such a study may shed more light on the mechanism of ascospore release. Ascospores are violently discharged from asci into the air which is the main mode of dissemination of this destructive fungus. Low temperature scanning electron microscopy (SEM) has distinct advantages over other methods of preparation and observation in that the tissues under examination are not subjected to chemical fixatives and dehydrating solvents used in critical-point drying techniques which can give rise to shrinkage and other morphological distortions.
