Zusammenfassung: | A small radiating element, designed to work in the GSM frequency band, made up entirely of square parts on air substrate is described. The dimensions of the ground plane are only 1.3 times the dimensions of the radiating element. By stacking two square wire patches, the characteristics of compactness, large bandwidth, and monopolar wire radiation pattern can be achieved. Circular designs have been already been presented, however, compared to the circular plates solution, the new structure described in this paper allows an easier realization as well as a protective dielectric radome. Owing to its low‐profile, low‐cost, and radioelectric properties such as large bandwidth and dipolar‐type radiation pattern, this antenna is very suitable for automobile or indoor ceiling applications which require a very small ground plane. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
