Karelianite, a new vanadium mineral

The name karelianite is proposed for the pure end-member V2O3 and the natural material discovered in boulders at the Outokumpu copper mine in Finland. The mineral has been analyzed by electron probe, giving the formula (V1.82Fe0.08Cr0.07MnO0.03)O3. X-ray powder data are given; a = 4.99, c = 13.98 A;...

Zusammenfassung:The name karelianite is proposed for the pure end-member V2O3 and the natural material discovered in boulders at the Outokumpu copper mine in Finland. The mineral has been analyzed by electron probe, giving the formula (V1.82Fe0.08Cr0.07MnO0.03)O3. X-ray powder data are given; a = 4.99, c = 13.98 A; space group is R3c; isostructural with hematite, eskolaite, and corundum. An associated isometric vanadium oxide containing 63 percent V2O3 may be a new spinel-type mineral, but further study is needed to determine its relationship with coulsonite. Small crystals of a third oxide have been tentatively identified as nolanite.
