Illyrianism and the Croation quest for statehood.(Illyrian is the classical name for the Balkan Peninsula)

Croatia achieved independence in 1992 after centuries of bondage and fragmentation. The Croats originally believed they could be free only within a common Balkan state. Events in the late 1980s and early 1990s allowed the Croats to overcome the Serbs in becoming a free state.
