Amid the process of bureaucratization of Portuguese administration, between the 17th and 18 th centuries, magistrates gained a prominent place. During this period, they served in roles linked to the administration of justice, government and fiscality. The profile of judge Joao Bernardo Gonzaga can help to broaden the interpretative horizon on the offices and behaviors of magistrates serving the Portuguese monarchy in the 18 th century.
