Generational transmission of women in family agriculture and artisanal fishing/Transmissao geracional de mulheres na agricultura familiar e pesca artesanal

Generational renewal is a relevant issue in the context of the future of agriculture and fisheries, as it is related to rural and youth migration, and the aging of the rural population. Understanding the factors behind the willingness of potential successors to take control of the family entity is crucial for the continuity of agricultural activities. In this context, the study aims to identify the different points of view of the daughters of farmers and fishermen, about the possibility of taking control of rural activities carried out by their parents in the municipalities of Braganca, Viseu and Augusto Correa, in Para. Data were collected through face-to-face dynamics, similar to a board game, based on Q-Methodology guidelines and semi-structured interviews with 60 daughters of these professionals, 20 in each municipality, about the factors that affect the possibility women to continue the family business. Seven main points of view were identified: working conditions, living conditions, attractiveness of socialization, family support, associative organizations, institutional support and attractiveness of the rural environment; and financial autonomy. The results suggest that there are different points of view that need to be considered when assessing the probability of succession in rural communities. These different points of view must be used by policymakers to adjust current principles and develop programs to encourage these women to take control of activities, seeking to remain in rural areas.
