The maxillary sinus lift is a surgical technique used in implant dentistry to enable the placement of dental implants in patients who have significant bone loss in the posterior maxillary region. This procedure is necessary when the bone height available for implant fixation is insufficient due to pneumatization of the maxillary sinus after tooth loss. During the maxillary sinus lift procedure, the sinus membrane is carefully elevated and the space the resulting bone graft is filled. There are different approaches to performing this procedure, including the lateral access technique and the crestal access technique, with the choice being dependent on the anatomical characteristics of the patient and the surgeon's preference. Indications for maxillary sinus lift include patients who require dental implants in the posterior maxillary region and have inadequate bone height due to bone resorption and pneumatization of the maxillary sinus. However, there are some contraindications, such as the presence of chronic sinusitis or unfavorable sinus anatomy. Materials used during the procedure include autogenous, allogeneic or xenogenic bone grafts, as well as bone regeneration membranes. After the procedure, a proper healing period is essential before dental implants are placed. While maxillary sinus lift is generally considered safe and effective, complications such as sinus membrane perforation, postoperative infection, or bone graft resorption can occur. Proper management of these complications is essential for the success of the procedure. Therefore, maxillary sinus lift plays a crucial role in implant dentistry, allowing oral rehabilitation of patients with tooth loss in the posterior maxillary region. With a proper understanding of surgical technique, materials, and postoperative care, it is possible to achieve predictable and satisfactory results for patients.
