Surgery is often the only curative intervention or intervention that can alleviate disability caused by common health conditions. It is estimated that 234 million extensive surgical procedures (procedure with incision, excision, manipulation of structures, suture and anesthesia--carried out in the operating room) are carried out per year in the world, which means that for every 25 people alive, 01 need to pass through a surgical block. In 2008, the WHO estimated that 50% of these deaths related to complications in surgery could be avoided. So, in the age of science, where everything has evolved, is it still justifiable for surgical patients to suffer and burden public coffers with prolonged hospitalizations due to foreseen and reversible causes? It was from this questioning that the WHO and Harvard University began setting up a checklist that has the objetive of guaranteeing the surgical safety of patients: this is the organizational process of the Safe Surgery Save Lives Program.
