Zusammenfassung: | Introduction: Urinary incontinence (UI) is defined as involuntary loss of urine, and is a prevalent condition related to the pelvic floor that occurs in up to 50% of adult women. In the elderly, it can have a major impact on quality of life, even influencing mortality and cognitive function. There are different types of Ui, such as urgency, effort, and mixed. Treatment varies depending on the type of UI and may include conservative strategies, medications and surgery. Objective: Understand the main forms of treatment, as well as their indications for urinary incontinence in elderly patients. Method: This is a literary review article. The scientific articles selected for analysis were published between 2019 and 2024, using the Boolean operators AND and OR. The inclusion criteria cover articles in Portuguese, English and Spanish, with access to the full text in electronic format. However, the exclusion criteria include theses, chapters of theses, proceedings of congresses or conferences, academic books, technical and scientific reports, in addition to ministerial documents. Conclusion: Urinary incontinence is a significant challenge for the elderly population, considerably affecting quality of life and causing social, hygienic and health problems, in addition to being associated with an increased risk of mortality in the elderly, negatively influencing their daily activities and cognitive function.
