ANALISIS HEMEROGRAFICO DE LA COMIDA EN EL SEMANARIO CUBANO BOHEMIA DURANTE EL PERIODO ESPECIAL EN TIEMPOS DE PAZ

In this essay I examine important archival documents from the Cuban periodical press that so far have not been analyzed. The material dates from the first five years of the so-called "Special Period in Times of Peace", 1990-1995. The Special Period in Cuba began after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and entailed the total loss of subsidies and economic support to Cuba from the Soviet Union. This fact worsened the effects of the blockade which had been imposed by the United States on Cuba since 1962 that restricted access to products on the island. These factors had a direct impact on the food available and, therefore, on the daily food intake. This study examines how the Cuban press reflected the food crisis and proposed solutions to the enormous food shortages that the island suffered during this five-year period.
