Zusammenfassung:The State of Sao Paulo is commonly portrayed as the most modern state of the country, whose field would be the most developed. This idea hides and always hid a wicked facet of capitalist development in the field: the immense precarious conditions of life and work and the huge exploitation of workers. This facet only got worse during authoritarian periods. This article seeks to portray this process, as well part of the resistance to these conditions in the state, particularly regarding sugarcane production.
