Zusammenfassung: | Cinema and architecture are two different disciplines that express structures of time and space. These two disciplines interact with each other as architecture uses cinema to produce theory while cinema uses architecture to create itself. As an example of such an interaction, this study analyzes space through cinematic narratives. The chosen case study is Kubrick's films because instead of providing passive decoration, the spaces in these films direct dramatic action and strengthen cinematic narrative. The toilet and bathrooms used in the films were analyzed through a phenomenological method that looks at these spaces as entities that contain and give meaning, instead of as sole substance. The main aim of this study is to detect content relationships produced through space in cinematic narratives by focusing on a specific type of space used in the films of a director. The films that were scrutinized in this respect were Lolita (1962), Dr. Strangelove (1964), 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), A Clockwork Orange (1971), The Shining (1980), Full Metal Jacket (1987) and Eyes Wide Shut (1999). In the study, terms associated with toilets and bathrooms were first examined. It has been found that the terms with which these spaces are most commonly associated are dirt and hygiene. After discussing toilets and bathrooms in cinematic narratives, the toilets and bathrooms in Kubrick's cinematic narratives were associated with the terms of dirt and hygiene and examined in connection with the plots and characters. This study revealed that film characters' dirty characteristics, that is, their qualities that constituted a threat to the social order and hygiene, emerged in the toilet and bathroom spaces in the films. It was determined that Kubrick used toilets and bathrooms to correlate between social outcasts and the repulsiveness of bodily excretion while improving the plot, deciphering the characters and exposing the hidden. In addition, there was a pattern formed through the repetitive use of toilet and bathrooms and their symbolic and metaphorical meanings.
