The role of the cultural institutions in the gentrification process of la Candelaria neighborhood in Bogota: a case study/El papel de las instituciones culturales en el proceso de gentrificación del barrio la Candelaria de Bogotá: un estudio de caso/O papel das instituicoes culturais no processo de gentrificacao do bairro de la Candelaria Bogota: um estudo de caso

With this paper, I seek to frame the cultural institutions in the ongoing gentrification process of La Candelaria, a district of Bogota, by means of a critical selection of literature and its thoughtful implementation to the particular study case. First, I will establish a framework for the urban phenomenon of gentrification, an Anglo-Saxon concept that needs certain reinterpretations when using it to think Latin American cities. Second, I place La Candelaria as a subject to this urban phenomenon and, in particular, to how urban cultural heritage strategies and monumentalization of the public space have triggered it. Third, I will trace the international trend of contemporary art centers for recycling deteriorated buildings in gentrification zones as leading actors of change, and interpreting. All to try to prove the key role that cultural institutions have as catalysts for gentrification processes by their loyal service to high culture and the ideology it represents.
