Zusammenfassung: | Objective: To identify the frequency of burnout syndrome (BS) among physicians in residency program and exposure to organizational stressors in their working conditions. Method: An analytic study was conducted in a large public hospital in the city of Sao Paulo, Brazil. The sample was composed of 24 physicians who attended residency in Internal Medicine Program of the institution. They answered questionnaires about demographic data, occupational information, perception of work organization stressors, somatic symptoms and Brazilian Portuguese version of Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI). Results: The participants were mostly female, mean age of 26.6 years, enrolled in the first year of the residency program, reported an average of 68.7 working hours per week. The most frequent complaint was mental fatigue (95.8%). Half of the participants met the criteria for BS and there was not statistical association with independent variables. Excessive work demands were the most frequent negative organizational predictor (66.7%); among positive predictors, the most frequently reported was control over their work tasks (79.1%). Conclusion: There were cases of BS among physicians in internal medicine residency program of this hospital. These cases may be related to exposure to organizational predictors in work conditions. Therefore, it is necessary to focus on preventive approach in situations which negatively influence the health of young workers exposed.
