Victor Serpa and the "mania of foot-ball": the 'founding myth' of breton sport in Belo Horizonte City

We intend in this article to present and discuss the first steps of football in Belo Horizonte/MG, from the perspective of the trajectory of Victor Serpa, and how it became the founding myth of the sport in the state capital. For this, we use records from the local press, as the collections of the Official Press of Minas Gerais and Linhares Collection. In this sense, we contextualize the historical moment of passing through the town by Serpa (centrally year 1904) and the impact of his untimely death (in January 1905). Finally, we believe that the construction of the foundation myth finds important evidence to justify such an elaboration, since the sources reveal that the young scholar occupies a central role in the introduction of football in Belo Horizonte. His death impacted even the organic continuity of football practice in the city in the following years. Keywords: Founding Myth; Football; History. Tencionamos neste artigo apresentar e problematizar os primeiros movimentos do futebol em Belo Horizonte/MG, a partir da otica da trajetoria de Victor Serpa neste processo, e de como o mesmo se tornou o mito fundador deste esporte na capital mineira. Para tanto, usamos registros da imprensa local, tomando os acervos da Imprensa Oficial do Estado de Minas Gerais e da Colecao Linhares como espectro das fontes consultadas. Neste sentido, contextualizamos o momento historico da passagem de Serpa pela cidade (centralmente o ano de 1904) e o impacto causado pela sua prematura morte (em janeiro de 1905). Por fim, entendemos que a construcao do mito fundador encontra indicios importantes que justificam tal elaboracao, posto que as fontes revelam que o jovem academico ocupa protagonismo central na introducao do futebol em Belo Horizonte, a ponto da sua morte ter impactado inclusive a continuidade organica da pratica futebolistica na cidade nos anos seguintes.
