Zusammenfassung: | OBJECTIVE: To analyze the relations between the body mass index (BMI) and alimentary habits in the development of the obesity. METHODS: 168 employees of Vital Brazil popular pharmacies had been evaluated, adults and young, 20 to 50 years old, both sexes. To evaluate the relation between alimentary habits and obesity, we used alimentary questionnaire with twenty-four-hours recall, describing the regular foods, amount and quality of these foods and the consumption schedules. We used also the estimate of expense caloric presumed, respecting the formula of the WHO. The body mass index was used to classification obesity. RESULTADOS: 168 evaluated employees, men and women had presented varied degrees of obesity and overweight, between youngest and elderly, these results were easily verified since they presented lack of information, incorrect use of the groups of foods, for the distance between the meals, the suppression of one of them, mainly breakfast, for the substitution of supper for snacks, for the constant candy use, salty, cooling, snacks, so as the consumption of much more calories than the necessary one should have for the maintenance of the health. CONCLUSION: Alimentary habits were determinative factors of body mass index, or Quetelet index, was used in this case as corporal composition indicator of adults between 20 and 50 years. As many men as women had presented varied degrees of obesity and overweight, also with decurrently pathologies, such as: diabetes, hypertension. OBJETIVO: Analisar as relacoes existentes entre o indice de massa corporal (IMC) e os habitos alimentares no desenvolvimento da obesidade. METODOS: Foram avaliados 168 funcionarios das farmacias populares Vital Brazil, jovens adultos de 20 a 50 anos, de ambos os sexos. Para avaliar a relacao obesidade e habitos alimentares, utilizou-se um questionario alimentar com recordatorio de 24 horas, com a utilizacao usual de alimentos, quantidade e qualidade desses alimentos e os horarios desse consumo. Utilizamos tambem a estimativa de gasto calorico presumido, respeitando a formula da OMS. O indice de massa corporal foi utilizado para classificacao da obesidade. RESULTADOS: Dos 168 funcionarios avaliados, homens e mulheres apresentaram graus variados de obesidade e sobrepeso, tanto os mais jovens, quanto os com idades mais avancadas.
