Zusammenfassung:This study thinks over social gaps as discussed by Peter Singer and compares it with the guiding principles of the Unified Health System (SUS). Conceptual and theoretical frameworks of Singer's Utilitarian Theory were articulated with the guiding principles of the SUS. Utilitarianism sets up priority actions which can favor most people. The SUS is guided by a number of principles with a single objective: to ensure quality and free of charge health services to all citizens. However, it has been noticed that those principles are not universally abided by, generating an exclusionary process affecting the poorest, in particular. Significant changes in health care with stronger effectiveness are therefore required for all Brazilian citizens.
