Nitrogen saturation in temperate forest ecosystems: hypotheses revisited

Nitrogen in soils is immobilized through fungal assimilation and exudation using the host plant's photosynthate as carbon source. During nitrogen saturation, soil microbial communities shift from being fungal to bacterial dominated. This leads to increased nitrification and nitrate mobility.
