Zusammenfassung: | Electrophysiological and pharmacological studies were conducted on the effect of histamine on the lateral inhibition in the eye of the horseshoe crab. Tests were made to determine whether histamine imitates the action of lateral inhibition on optic nerve activity generated by eccentric cells. In addition, the role of histamine receptor blocker cimetidine was also tested in the lateral inhibition of eccentric cell responses. These tests revealed that histamine is the mediator of lateral inhibition in the eye of horseshoe crabs. |
