Zusammenfassung: | From the analysis of police officers' testimony in eight focal groups, the article shows the mechanisms for whereby the public security agents recognize themselves as victims of their hierarchical superiors, political elites and civil society in general. Without denying the corruption and the abusive use of force by members of the corporation, the police officers develop a speech in which those practices are understood as inevitable ways of the modus operandi they are obligated to do in the exercise of their function. As a theoretical background hypothesis, the article sustains that the discursive ways that support this perception constitute basic elements of what we could call a police culture in Rio de Janeiro, with strong impacts in the ways of acting and the way that these professionals see the world. As a practical unrolling, these representations would deepen the distance between police and society and function as reinforcement to the resistance to changes inside police institution. Keywords Policing studies. Culture and violence. Public safety.
