Jane Austen and the Myth of the Enduring Jacobite

The notion that Jane Austen entertained Jacobite views throughout her life based Oliver Goldsmith's "History of England" on is examined. Jane Austen's changing attitudes to history are tracked through her letters and writing, as well as a construction of her reading in this field. However, any attempt to extrapolate the mature novelist's views from the "Juvenilia" is misguided.
