DE 3600458 A UPAB: 19930922 The integrated optical element consists of a monolithic electro-optical component with electrodes to generate a horizontal or vertical electric field. The element alters the phase and the polarisation direction of the light passing through it. The element may have a flat bottom surface and a stepped top surface. To generate a horizontal field, there are electrodes on either side of the raised stop in the top surface, one of them having a p+ doped area under it, the other having a n+ area. To generate a vertical field, electrodes are applied to the raised step on the top surface and to the flat bottom surface. There is a p+ doped area at the top electrode with a n' area underneath and the bottom portion over the bottom electrode is n+ doped. USE - Lasers, photodiodes, optical waveguides. 0/5
