An ultrasonic transmitter (21) transmits an ultrasonic pulse (41) as a sine wave to the liquid phase through one electromagnetic wave section. An ultrasonic receiver (22) receives part of the sine wave through the other electromagnetic wave section. The run time of the ultrasonic impulse between the ultrasonic transmitter and ultrasonic receiver is measured. Liquid level is determined based on the determined run time. USE - For e.g. open waters. ADVANTAGE - Eliminates need for mechanically mobile components while enabling highly accurate liquid level determination regardless of liquid surface condition.
