The invention relates to a machining head for machining materials, in particular laser machining, having at least one guiding device for a machining beam and/or an electrode, an illumination unit (11), and an optical detector (1) with which illuminating radiation reflected and/or scattered back by the machining region when machining materials can be detected. The illumination unit (11) has multiple light sources (5) and optical deflecting elements (6) for deflecting optical radiation at a fixed angle, said deflecting elements being arranged such that the illuminating radiation emitted by the light sources (5) is directed towards the machining region via the optical deflecting elements (6) and is at least partly superimposed in the machining region. The aforementioned arrangement and design of the illumination unit allows an efficient and homogenous illumination of the machining region.
