Zusammenfassung:In its day, nineteenth-century London was one of the most prominent centers for Italian opera. That top singers earned top fees contributed to the fact that the city was home to many first performances of Verdi operas in England. Nevertheless, a large number of Verdi operas were not performed there. Based on an essay by Roberta Montemorra Marvin, this paper aims to identify external factors, as opposed to workimmanent criteria, that contributed to omissions such as La battaglia di Legnano and Macbeth. In addition to a general assessment of Victorian censorship, contributing aspects including performance history, the role of soloists, as well as socio-cultural specifics of London’s Italian opera scene will be discussed.
