Zusammenfassung:	Kernel smut of rice is an endemic disease in the southern rice-growing (Oryza sativa L.) region of the USA. The fungus causing kernel smut is now known not to be transmitted by systemic infection, but to develop from a local inoculation at anthesis by airborne secondary sporidia. The purpose of this study was to clarify the generic placement of this fungus.
