Synthesis of optimal macro production plans in planned economies: a Syrian example [Syrian Arab Republic]

Extract: This article illustrates how the manufacturing capacities of the individual production sectors in a centrally-planned economy can be accounted for when analyzing the effects of alternative macro production plans. A linear programming input-output model was developed for the Syrian economy which was constrained by sector capacities and labor availability. This model was then used to determine the minimum capacities required of all sectors in 1985 to meet alternative projections of final demand
