Evaluation of spear yield and spear trait on stem diameter investigation of asparagus (Asparagus officinalis L.)

To simplify the investigation of spear yield in asparagus (Asparagus officinalis L.) growing tests, we evaluated the spear yield and spear trait by measuring the stem diameter of all asparagus harvested, and developed a program for spear yield estimation using accumulated data. Analysis of the asparagus growing tests demonstrated that there were highly positive correlations between the spear yield obtained by estimation using the program and by real measurement. Differences between asparagus varieties, strains, and treatment methods could be evaluated using the newly developed program for the estimation of spear yield, and the program can be efficiently used for asparagus variety and cultivation tests as a simple and labor-saving means.
