Zusammenfassung: | The development of urban centres in the function of tourism is a process that
has swept across Europe and other industrialized countries outside of Europe.
Today around 70% of tourist traffic in Europe is realized in the cities, and the
gross domestic product generated from tourism is about 15%. In accordance
with the development and study the relationship between urban and tourist
development. This interrelationship has opened many questions of theoretical
and applied geography. Urban systems are being developed for centuries. Their
urban and economic structure is adapted to the needs of tourism development.
Tourism has become one of the important internal strengths of the city. Finding
answers to develop this process has opened theoretical discussions. Today cities
are dominated by a competitive relationship. Some cities in their development
are observed in comparison to other cities. They want to become economical, in
business and in a cultural way more attractive than other cities, which compete
to attract new economic activities, capital and functions that may contribute to
their superiority. In addition, adopting the strategy of reconstruction and the
application of modern design and architecture, which also contributes to the
attractiveness of cities with which strengthens the function of tourist cities. So
megalopolises develop the tourist megalopolis, metropolis of tourism
metropolis. The dissertation lists Dubrovnik as an example of transformation of
urban systems in tourism. Dubrovnik belongs to the category of small cities with
up to 50,000 inhabitants. The characteristics of the urban system of Dubrovnik
and tourism are the following: one of the 6,000 cities of a similar size in Europe,
is one of the five most dynamic of European tourist destinations, is one of the
most visited cruising port in the Mediterranean, employment in tourism is four
times higher than in European cities; in European cities an average of 21% of
employees work in tourism in Dubrovnik this is around 80%. It’s historic core is
completely transformed from the primary to the secondary housing. Of all
European cities and towns, the transformation processes happen in the historical medieval ones the most. Many cities and towns which don’t have
other resources for development choose to develop tourism. As a consequence
