Diary: Iraq, 1916

IE TCD MS 10516 is R.W.G. Hingston’s paperback journal. Manuscript note on inside of front cover reads ‘RWG Hingston. Private Journal. From 9 July 1916 to 12 October 1916’. This journal is a continuation of IE TCD MS 10515. Hingston writes this journal while on military duty with the first entry beginning in Nasiriyah (Iraq). He travels around the River Euphrates basin stopping at Basra, Shatt-al-Arab, Kurna (Qurnah), Chahbaish and Lake Hammar. Hingston describes and sketches the natural history of this region including the animals, insects, landscape and meteorological phenomena. He includes maps and military manoeuvres undertaken by the army and notes the discovery of pottery shards in the city of Ur (Iraq). 9 July-12 October 1916 ; 93 folios. Continued by IE TCD MS 10517.
