Zusammenfassung: | The 2012 campaign continued research in the intra and extra muros from Ulmetum north-west gate. The research campaign carried out in the Roman-Byzantine fortress of Ulmetum, the western sector, was intended to continue the digging from the previous year and at the same time to clarify the stratigraphical situation due to removing of debris. We drawn two trenches S 2 respectively S 4; they were arranged perpendicular to the enclosure wall, most of them being placed in the extramural area. During the archaeological excavation, we removed the remains of debris from the northern enclosure wall, and we recovered pottery fragments , some bronze coins, pieces of scrap iron and building materials. We discovered at least two different layers of construction, the earliest being represented by a screed and the second one by a mixture of clay and gravel. Both layers were pierced by waste pits. In the future campaigns we intend to expand the research in the same direction for a more comprehensive overview about the Roman Byzantine destruction and to complete the stratigraphic situation. The excavations were continued near the southeast quadrangle tower, located on the south side of the fortification, between the southwest gate and small gate. One purpose of the campaign of 2012 from „Cartaș-oven Panaitescu” sector was to continue identification evidence of habitation from early medieval period in different points near the city. |
