Dixon of Dock Green illustrated the daily lives of policemen including their own struggles as well as the challenges they faced at work. The main character in the series, experienced policeman George Dixon, was played by Jack Warner. At the beginning of each episode he spoke directly to the audience looking straight into the camera. Written by Ted Willis, the series ran for over twenty years and stayed popular even though competition appeared on the BBC with the introduction of other police series such as Z Cars and Softly Softly.
