This winter a 14-year-old boy caused a political earthquake in Asia. Urgyen Thinley, the 17th reincarnation of the Lama Karmapa, leader of the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism, and third most important figure in this religion's hierarchy, fled from Tibet to Dharamshala in India to study with the Dalai Lama. The Lama Karmapa's escape from police surveillance and the Tsurphu Monastery where he lived, was a blow to China's attempt to project an image of religious tolerance.
This was a triumph for the Dalai Lama in the war between the Tibetans and the Chinese government. Some of the many battles being fought between the two revolve around several children who are considered to be reincarnations of important religious figures. The most serious case was that of the Panchen Lama, a boy who disappeared five years ago. His crime was to have been chosen as the reincarnation of Tibet's second religious figure by the Dalai Lama. The Chinese designated another Panchen Lama and have gone even one step further: they've officially acknowledged the reincarnation of the Reting Rimpoché, the person in charge of finding the next Dalai Lama.
In this intricate affair in which the lines between religion and politics are blurred, a number of innocent children have been caught in the crossfire. Sides are being taken for when the charismatic figure of the Tibetans, the present Dalai Lama, dies. Meanwhile, the backdrop to these events is the political situation in Tibet where repression and mass immigration from China are a threat to the survival of an ancient people and culture.
This report looks at these conflicts through the experiences of the Tibetan community that has sought asylum in India and Barcelona. Part of the report looks at how the Lama Osel Hita, a Spanish boy studying at the monastic Sera University in southern India, is coping. Ceremonies held in honor of Tibet's national holiday and the Tibet festival in Bombay were also filmed.
