Unless an unlikely solution to the Serbian political crisis is soon found, this Sunday will mark the 68th day of protests in Belgrade. The marathon-like student demonstration which began last Sunday--a face-to-face student-police standoff which lasted for hours in downtown Belgrade--is symbolic of the current stalemate situation.
30 MINUTS was on the scene as the protesting intensified and the student demonstration--baptized "cordon against cordon"--began. The program crew captures seven days of protests, meetings and student and opposition activities, including the huge turnout--500,000 people--on the orthodox New Year.
The report focuses on the student movement in particular, revealing its imaginative and combative spirit. The crew managed to gain access to certain debates and meetings usually barred to media coverage due to the tight security measures imposed by the students. Two tension-filled highpoints were the students' attempt to force the university president's resignation and the 14-hour face-to-face confrontation with the police in 0ºC temperatures which finally ended when anti-riot squads were withdrawn out of sheer impotence.
Opposition leader Zoran Djinjitx, virtually the new mayor of Belgrade, and Vesna Pèsic, leader of Zajedno, one of the first to oppose Milosevic, are interviewed in the report. Cedo Iovanovic, charismatic leader of the student revolt, is also filmed, both during public appearances and at his "hideout", as he calls it, where he's been living.
