Extension at Pottergate Lodge, Pottergate, Lincoln

Pottergate Lodge is a Grade II Listed Building within Lincoln's Conservation Area 1, and lies in an area of known archaeological importance, with remains dating from the Roman, medieval and post-medieval periods present in the immediate vicinity. In particular, Pottergate Lodge is situated immediately outside the line of the medieval Close Wall, the defensive enclosure of the Close of Lincoln Cathedral. The house itself is thought to date from the late 18th century. Planning permission and Listed Building Consent were granted in 2005/06 for a programme of demolition, new construction, and internal/external alteration. The permission included a condition requiring that an archaeological watching brief be carried out in conjunction with the groundworks. Lincs Archaeo-tech was commissioned by the owner/developer, Mr McCartney, to carry out the required archaeological services, and intermittent site attendance was undertaken at the end of June 2006. In spite of the site's apparent potential, however, the results of the project ultimately provided no direct evidence for ancient occupation on the site itself, with the majority of the deposits and features apparently of either modern or natural origin. The only possible exception to this was a remnant of wall revealed towards the west of the site, which appeared to be associated with the original phase of Pottergate Lodge, although this hypothesis could not be conclusively proven.
